Historylinks Costume Exhibition - now closed
Dornoch Hub 12th – 13th March 2022 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Historylinks Museum welcomes you to a fascinating fashion journey through the ages at the Dornoch Hub, Argyll Street. The exhibition is FREE OF CHARGE with any donations going towards Historylinks Museum Extension Fund.
On loan from Grantown Museum we invite you to come and see period costume inspired by film and TV. From the 18th Century red silk gown and Highland Dress worn by Claire and Jamie in Outlander to a gown fit for the young Queen Victoria, the stunning Georgian style of Pride and Prejudice and on to the elegant Edwardian fashion of Downton Abbey.
The costumes were all created by Suzi, a volunteer at Grantown Museum for their ‘Adventures in Costume’ Project. She has lovingly reproduced costume from different periods in History and it is not only the outer garment that Suzi has made but all the undergarments are exact replicas of underwear worn at the time.
These costumes and more are available to try on at Grantown Museum and we are grateful for their loan for this exhibition.
Suzi has remained true to the original fabrics using an array of silks, linen, and muslin. With intricate hand embroidering, ruffles galore and yards of amazing fabric, they all give a tantalising flavour of the times and are a real feast for the eyes!
There will be a video running throughout the exhibition of Suzi demonstrating, using one of the gowns on display, how women during the 18th Century got dressed in the morning. It’s no wonder they needed help!
Katherine Gray Dress
Historylinks Museum is proud to have on loan a gown from 1710 that belonged to Katherine Gray of Overskibo. The gown is made from exquisite silk woven in Spitalfields, London. Despite being altered up to 4 times over the years the colours of the brocade fabric are almost as vibrant as the day it was made, demonstrating the incredible skill of the dyers and weavers during this period in history. Although not included in the Dornoch Hub exhibition, Historylinks Museum will be open during Fibre Fest FREE of CHARGE from 10.30am to 4pm. Katherine Gray's gown is not currently on permanent display but you can book an appointment for a free private viewing on 01862 811275 or by email - email@example.com
